Objectives:The objective of the present study was to establish whether the use of oral finasteride (Propecia) is associated with an increased incidence of recurrence of hair loss in the early stage of hair loss in the early treatment period.
Methods:In a prospective study, we examined the association between the use of finasteride and recurrence of hair loss in early treatment period.
Results:Among 812 patients, the mean age was 62.5 years (range: 41 to 80 years). The mean duration of treatment was 52.8 months (range: 27 to 83 months). The recurrence rate was higher in the first and the second treatment months (28.9% and 24.1%, respectively). Among the patients treated with finasteride, the rate of recurrence was higher in the first treatment month (19.2%) and in the second treatment month (16.3%). The rate of recurrence was not statistically different between the first and second treatment periods. In a multivariate analysis, the recurrence rate was found to be associated with the use of finasteride.
Conclusions:The use of finasteride was associated with a higher recurrence rate, but the rate of recurrence was higher in the first and second treatment periods. The use of finasteride may increase the incidence of recurrence in the early treatment period.
Finasteride (Propecia) is an oral tablet and is a prescription drug that is indicated for the treatment of male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) in men, androgenetic alopecia (analgesia) in women.1,2Finasteride is a type II 5-alpha reductase inhibitor that is used to inhibit the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone that is responsible for hair loss in men. DHT is the primary cause of hair loss in men.3,4
The main mechanism of action of finasteride is to inhibit the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, which reduces the level of DHT in the scalp. The 5-alpha reductase enzyme is expressed in many hair follicles. The 5-alpha reductase enzyme is involved in the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT).5,6
Finasteride is classified as an oral tablet (oral tablets with or without the aid of an active ingredient) and a topical solution. The oral tablet is used to treat hair loss, but the topical solution is applied directly to the scalp. The active ingredient is finasteride, which is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor.
